The economic recession that began in 2008 has taken a hard toll on the city’s low-income residents, with many experiencing long periods of unemployment or facing medical crises with no health insurance. Bankruptcy provides a fresh start, and Mobilization for Justice’s project is helping to meet a growing need for assistance to low-income New Yorkers in an underserved area. Typical clients include:
• Individuals who lost their jobs and accumulate credit card debt while unemployed
• Individuals with no health insurance who accumulate medical debt
• Individuals with credit card debt who are exploited by debt settlement companies
Individuals needing advice and assistance with bankruptcy can call Mobilization for Justice’s Bankruptcy intake line on Wednesdays, between 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm at 212-417-3799.
