Breonna Taylor has not received justice.
The decision to only charge one of the police officers involved with her killing is bad enough. The fact that the charge is for property damage rather than murder is further proof that we cannot rely on a criminal justice system that refuses to hold the police accountable for killing an unarmed Black woman or to “enforce the law”. The fight to defund the police and redistribute funding is not just a question of allocating resources more efficiently. It’s the fight to ensure that we are investing in the safety of all Americans regardless of the color of their skin. It’s the fight to ensure that Black Lives actually matter. Justice for Breonna means that we cannot simply arrest the “few bad apples” that killed her, but we must fight to ensure that police officers never murder again.
