Guilty on all three counts. Yesterday, a jury found former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin guilty of murdering George Floyd. We sincerely hope that this verdict brings a small amount of peace for George Floyd’s family, loved ones, and community. The fact that a white police officer has been convicted of murdering a Black man provides a glimmer of hope for addressing the massive, systemic inequality and injustice that Black, Brown, Indigenous, and other marginalized communities face in this country. Accountability for law enforcement officials is critical, but this fight is far from over, as evidenced by yesterday’s devastating fatal shooting of 16-year-old Ma’Khia Bryant by police in Columbus, Ohio. The importance of the worldwide resistance in the name of George Floyd and countless other victims of police brutality cannot be overstated. We stand with those calling for the systemic change necessary to dismantle a culture of violence and abuse towards marginalized communities, and to reallocate funds to social services that will better provide for the needs of the community. George Floyd’s life matters, and Black Lives Matter. We will not stop fighting until there is equal justice for all.
