Today, January 6, marks the one-year anniversary of a dark day in American history, one in which thousands of violent insurrectionists—encouraged by the nation’s Commander in Chief—stormed our nation’s capital in an unprecedented attempt to stop the essential democratic process of the peaceful transfer of power from one president to another. Their actions and the rhetoric that inspired them were and continue to be a direct and ongoing threat to the promise inherent in American democracy, a threat that sadly has not passed. We strongly condemn their anti-democratic, racist violence, and urge our nation’s leaders to hold everyone involved accountable. A functioning democracy requires constant vigilance by its citizens, and as Americans, we must all do our part to preserve and extend it to underserved voices and communities. This is the timeless challenge of democracy, and one that Mobilization for Justice is committed to meeting in our work.
