How MFJ Collects Phone Numbers
MFJ does not require phone numbers from MFJ website visitors through forms or other automated means. MFJ also does not require individuals to provide phone numbers to access our free legal services or use the MFJ website.

- Via telephone or email communications with MFJ employees.
- Through verbal consent for those who wish to receive text message updates.
Consent and Opt-In to Receive Text Messages
Individuals who provide their phone number to MFJ and consent to receiving text messages agree to receive informational and service-related text messages from MFJ. Message frequency varies based on your service needs and engagement with our organization. Message and data rates may apply.
After consent to receive text messages is provided, MFJ may use phone numbers to:
- Send appointment reminders and case updates.
- Provide important legal information and resources.
- Share organizational updates and service announcements.
- Communicate time-sensitive information related to a case or inquiry.
- Provide any other relevant information
Privacy and Data Security
MFJ respects your privacy and are committed to protecting your personal information.
Information Sharing: No mobile information will be shared with third parties/affiliates for marketing/promotional purposes. All other categories, including but not limited to email communications, exclude text messaging originator opt-in data and consent; this information will not be shared with any third parties.

Terms and Conditions
Effective Date: March 13, 2026
SMS Communications
Providing a phone number to Mobilization for Justice (“MFJ”) is entirely voluntary. MFJ does not require any individual — including clients, potential clients, volunteers, or donors — to provide a phone number as a condition of receiving services or participating in any MFJ program.
How MFJ Uses Your Phone Number
If you voluntarily provide your phone number to MFJ and give oral consent to receive SMS messages — either in-person or during a phone call with your assigned MFJ advocate — your advocate may use that number to contact you directly regarding your case, appointment scheduling, or case-related updates. Your phone number will not be shared with third parties, sold, used for marketing purposes, or used for any mass communications.
How MFJ Obtains Consent
MFJ only initiates SMS communication after an individual’s assigned advocate has personally spoken with that individual — either in person or by phone — and the individual has verbally agreed to receive SMS messages from that advocate. No automated or keyword opt-in systems are used.
Types of Messages
Messages you receive may include:
- Appointment confirmations and reminders
- Case status updates
- Court date notifications
- Document submission reminders
- Legal deadline alerts
- Intake appointment scheduling
- Resource and referral information
- Program updates related to your legal matter
Message Frequency
Message frequency varies depending on your individual case needs and legal matters with potential increases during active case proceedings, approaching court dates, or when time-sensitive information needs to be communicated.
How to Stop Receiving SMS Messages
You may withdraw your consent to receive SMS messages from MFJ at any time by:
- Informing your assigned MFJ advocate directly, in person;
- Informing your assigned MFJ advocate by phone or email; or
- Replying to any SMS message you receive from your advocate indicating that you no longer wish to receive SMS messages.
Opt-out requests are handled personally and immediately by the assigned advocate. Because MFJ’s SMS program consists solely of direct advocate-to-individual communications, there are no mass-messaging lists from which to unsubscribe; further, standard mass-messaging opt-out commands (such as system-wide STOP/HELP keywords) may be used but are unnecessary.
Message and Data Rates
Standard message and data rates from your mobile carrier may apply to SMS messages you receive from your MFJ advocate.
Supported Carriers
MFJ’s SMS service is available on major U.S. wireless carriers including AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint, and others. Check with your carrier for compatibility.
Data Security and Retention
MFJ implements reasonable security measures to protect phone numbers and text message data from unauthorized access, disclosure, or misuse. MFJ retains phone numbers and related data only for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes outlined in this policy or as required by law.
User Responsibilities
Individuals who voluntarily provide phone numbers agree to:
- Provide accurate and current mobile phone number information
- Notify MFJ promptly if the phone number changes
- Use the service only for lawful purposes related to legal representation
- Not use the service to transmit spam, harassment, or abusive content
Updates to Mobile Phone Number
If an individual’s mobile phone number changes, please notify MFJ immediately at (212) 417-3700 so MFJ can update our records and ensure continued receipt of important communications about legal matters.
Limitation of Liability
MFJ is not liable for:
- Delays or failures in message delivery due to carrier service interruptions, technical issues, or phone service problems
- Charges imposed by your wireless carrier
- Consequences of missed appointments or deadlines if messages are not received due to technical failures, phone issues, or other circumstances beyond our control
While MFJ uses SMS to facilitate communication, you remain responsible for attending scheduled appointments and meeting legal deadlines. SMS messages are a courtesy service and do not replace your responsibility to stay informed about your case.
Service Modifications or Termination
MFJ reserves the right to modify, suspend, or terminate our SMS service at any time, with or without notice. MFJ may also terminate your access to SMS services if a person violates these terms or use the service inappropriately.
Changes to These Terms
MFJ may update these Terms and Conditions from time to time. MFJ will notify people of material changes by text message or through other communication methods. An individual’s continued participation in the SMS program after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.
No Guarantee of Service
While MFJ strives to provide reliable SMS communications, MFJ does not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free service. Text messages should not be the sole method of receiving critical case information.
Legal Services Not Affected
A person’s decision to receive or refuse SMS messages does not affect eligibility for or receipt of legal services from Mobilization for Justice. MFJ will continue to communicate through phone calls, email, or mail as appropriate.
Governing Law
These Terms and Conditions are governed by the laws of the State of New York without regard to conflict of law provisions.
