March is Women’s History Month. This is a time to celebrate and uplift women’s progress toward equality while also recognizing the rampant misogyny throughout places of all types of employment and everyday life in the United States.
The theme for 2026 is “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future,” which recognizes that sustainability reaches further than environmental concerns, touching on such matters as financial sustainability, building community, and fostering equity. These issues impact all of society, including the need to develop green technologies, to advance economic justice, strengthen education systems, and build civic power. This theme affirms that shaping a sustainable future means building systems that support both people and the planet we call home.
Included in our celebration of Women’s History Month is International Women’s Day. International Women’s Day began in the early 1900s as part of the labor movements in North America and Europe. The first National Woman’s Day was held in the U.S. in 1909. It was established to fight for women’s suffrage, better pay, and shorter working hours.
Today we celebrate International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month to remind ourselves and everyone that women have led movements for change since history was first recorded, and they continue to do so today.
