In testimony to the NYS Assembly, MFY shows how credit report errors lead to denials of employment, housing and loans to low-income consumers and recommends steps to better protect consumers.
In testimony before the New York City Council on April 15, 2013, MFY urged the Council to take stronger action to combat increasing harassment of elderly tenants.
In testimony before the City Council today, MFY showed that credit reports present a barrier to employment for those who most need jobs and do not predict whether an prospective employee will do a good job.
MFY and other organizations affiliated with the Center for New York City Neighborhoods signed on to a letter urging the city to provide further assistance to address the legal needs of New Yorkers devastated by Superstorm Sandy as part of the city’s Action Plan for funding under the Community Development Block Grant.
MFY Legal Services and Pro Bono Net joined forces to provide New Yorkers sued for consumer debt with online pro se forms and other resources to effectively respond to a lawsuit, along with court forms and resources for advocates and attorneys.
MFY joined more than 100 organizations in demanding that the Office of Mortgage Settlement Oversight enforce the national mortgage settlement’s servicing reforms and fair lending requirements and ensure transparency in banks’ reporting of consumer relief activities.
In a March 21, 2013 article in the Huffington Post, MFY Attorney Elizabeth Lynch comments that the FHFA report showing banks’ failure to report homeowner complaints of mortgage abuses is further evidence of the failure of government regulations to protect homeowners.
MFY urged the City Council to adopt legislation aimed at strengthening referral criteria so that homeless adults are not referred to dangerous three-quarter houses.
MFY is representing tenants at Brooklyn’s Greenpoint Hotel who are suing their landlord for egregious building violations. Tenants opened their doors to the press to see their living conditions, including rats, bedbugs, mold and crumbling bathrooms. Read coverage in the Daily News, Brooklyn Paper and DNAinfo.
Employees of BNV Home Care Agency, represented by MFY Legal Services and Abbey Spanier LLP, filed a lawsuit alleging that the agency stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from them and systematically violated NYS labor laws. Read the complaint here.
